Phelophepa Train Sixth Annual Gala Dinner
At Gotham Hall, NY NY
Nov 1st 2007

gloriaIt was a mere act of faith when the first eye care "train", boasting three clinic coaches, started out at the beginning of 1993 with the full financial support of Transnet. Thereafter, Transnet decided to take up total ownership of mobile health care on rail and this subsequently gave birth to one of the most ambitious projects ever to be undertaken by corporate South Africa: the launch of a fully fledged primary health care train, entailing the cementing of new partnerships, as well as role-players exchanging knowledge, human resources and services.

Called the "Phelophepa", meaning good, clean health, the train embarked on its new, ambitious mission at the beginning of 1994. This initial 13-coach train provided eye care, edu-care, medicine and health care to the rural communities of Southern Africa.

During 1995 the train was extended to 15 coaches, to include a dental and x-ray clinic. At the end of 1996 a 16th coach was added as a dental clinic while the existing dental clinic was changed into counseling cubicles. The beginning of 1998 saw another change to the train in that the X-ray clinic was converted into a further dental cubicle.

South Africa’s Archbishop Desmond Tutu ,is the Chairman of the Phelophepa Healthcare train in south Africa.
