27th Annual Benefit Gala for
One Hundred Black Men, Inc., NYC
At the Hilton Hotel, New York, NY
February 22, 2007

gloriaThe theme of the 2007 Annual Benefit Gala for One Hundred Black Men, Inc., New York City was “Recognizing Our Past-Redefining Our Future”.  Beginning with a cocktail reception at the sophisticated Hilton Hotel of New York, the event became a “who’s who” as celebrities from the entertainment and political arena partook in the elaborate but tastefully eloquent Black-tie affair.

Speaking at the reception Mayor Michael Bloomberg, New York City, thanked One Hundred Black Men, Inc., for supporting his efforts to bring about an increase in jobs, affordable housing and educational opportunities. His statement, “Working together we can make a dream a reality” brought home the realization for many that it is through collaborative efforts that the city and its citizens will flourish.

Also speaking at the reception were other New York dignitaries, Bill Thompson, Comptroller, Joel Klein, School Chancellor who thanked the organization for creating opportunities for children in the community, and Aldofo Carrion, Bronx Borough President who expressed his gratitude to the organization for training men of color to take charge of their futures.

Welcoming the guests and co-hosting the Benefit Gala was Award-winning anchor Maurice DuBois who co-anchors “CBS 2 News This Morning”, and Emmy Award-winning journalist Lori Stokes, anchor of eyewitness news this morning and eyewitness news at noon.  Philip Banks, Jr., President of One Hundred Black Men, Inc. updated the guests on the achievement and future commitments of the organization stating in his powerful and rousing speech that “I won’t back down and I won’t give up on our boys”. Also in attendance to help celebrate the achievements of One Hundred Black Men, Inc., and the honorees, were Gayle King, Editor-at-large at the Oprah magazine, and former Mayor David Dinkins and a list of others too numerous to name.

Congressman Charles B. Rangel, Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee   Distinguished Service Award was accepted by former New York City Mayor David Dinkins because due to conflicts in his schedule the congressman was unable to attend. Reverend Calvin O. Butts, Pastor Abyssinian Baptist Church, NYC received the Religious Leader Award, Mayor Cory A. Booker, Newark, NJ was the recipient of the Trailblazer Award, the Corporate Appreciation Award went to Ian Moore, Senior, Vice President, News Corporation, the Artist Achievement Award was given to soul and gospel singer Kirk Franklin while Rapper Kanye West received the Advocate for Social Change Award, and the recipient of the Sportsmanship Award, Curtis Martin, former New York Jets NFL Running Back whose heart wrenching story of his own pain and suffering and that of his mother’s, resulted in a standing ovation.
