Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Meeting

Building on President Clinton’s lifetime in public service, the reflects his belief that governments need collaboration from the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and other global leaders to effectively confront the world’s most pressing problems. After attending thousands of meetings during his career in which urgent needs were discussed but no action was taken to solve them, President Clinton saw a need to establish a new kind of meeting with an emphasis on results.

In 2005, President Clinton established CGI to turn ideas into action and to help our world move beyond the current state of globalization to a more integrated global community of shared benefits, responsibilities, and values. By gathering world leaders from a variety of backgrounds, CGI creates a unique opportunity to channel the capacities of individuals and organizations to realize change. To fulfill the action-oriented mission of CGI, all members devise practical solutions to global issues through the development of specific and measurable Commitments to Action.

CGI Annual Meetings have brought together more than 100 current and former heads of state, 14 Nobel Peace Prize winners, hundreds of leading global CEOs, major philanthropists and foundation heads, directors of the most effective non-governmental organizations, and prominent members of the media. These CGI members have made nearly 1,700 commitments valued at $57 billion, which have already improved more than 200 million lives in 150 countries.

The CGI community also includes CGI University (CGI U), a forum to engage college students in global citizenship; CGI Asia; and, MyCommitment.org, an online portal where anybody can make their own Commitment to Action. – President Bill Clinton will host the Fifth Annual Meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), an event that will bring together global leaders from business, government, academia, science, religion, and non-governmental organizations, including numerous heads of state, former heads of state, CEOs of multinational corporations and prominent philanthropists. CGI is a forum for participants to develop and then implement workable solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges.

Some of the following panels included: Plenary: Investing in Girls and Women , Every problem in the world is exacerbated by gender inequality. Even though women make up 50 percent of the world's population, girls and women continuously lack the same access as men to education, health care, jobs, and the political arena. Yet each year of schooling increases a woman's income by 10 to 20 percent, and closing the gender gap adds 0.5 percent to a country's per capita GNP. Smart businesses appreciate that increased support for girls and women is integral to fostering successful markets for the future. Innovative programs are already producing remarkable results, and far-seeing countries and organizations are finding that reaching out to girls and women deepens confidence, creates opportunity, and raises profits.
