 Since 1994, the Phelophepa "Train of Hope" has provided preventative health, dental and eye care for South Africa's most impoverished, rural provinces. Each year, more than 40,000 patients are treated on the train's semi-annual route. The American Friends of the Phelophepa Train is a registered 501(c)(3) public charity whose mission is to provide American individuals, foundations and corporations with opportunities to contribute to the Phelophepa cause. The AFPT actively recruits new board members who are driven stakeholders in improving the wellbeing of rural South Africa. AFPT seeks to engage donors of all sizes through traditional and web-based media and Gala events and pursues grants from American philanthropic foundations. By 2010 the AFPT will provide consistent operational funding for the Phelophepa train through effective fundraising and the establishment of a charitable trust. Thi years honoree’s included: This year, the Phelophepa Achievement Award for Excellence will be presented live to Archbishop-Emeritus Desmond M. Tutu for his support and commitment to advancing health care for the poor in South Africa, Robert W. Lane Chairman & CEO, John Deere & Company, Steve Killelea Founder & President, Global Peace Index,Chairman & Founder, Integrated Research Ltd. The Phelophepa Achievement Award for Excellence in recognition of his outstanding achievements toward the Global Peace process and his ever-ending commitment to South Africa and Africa at large.A special presentation went to Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon, which was presented by Ms Cathe Kruger,Executive VP of The American Friends of the Phelophepa Train. Other Guests in attendance were Academy Award winner superstar actress Whoopi Goldberg, Dr Benjamin Chavez, President of the Hip Hop Movement, and many more dignitaries, live entertainment was by: Mane Kadang Dance Company, Kyle Upshaw,former Motown recording Artist,and the Joyce Stovall and New York Christian Cultural Center Choir.
