Time Warner Summit: Politics 2008

The pleasure of discourse when it comes to politics and this years election seems to have given everyone , well , mostly journalists, pundits and political junkies like me, who attended the Time Warner political Summit either an orgasm or something very similar to a heroin hit. I was in the audience when I had the pleasure to witness one of my idols Wolf Blitzer from CNN moderate “Defining The American Experience“. Which entails the state of our global superpower – How the world sees us – And how we see the world.

This one panel included CNN best team in politics, CNN own , Chief International Correspondent, Christian Amanpour and GPS CNN and editor, Newsweek International Fareed Zakaria and among them were a few prominent people who we may not be too familiar with because they’re not on T.V as often, and on that list was: former Chief Spokesperson, Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq, Dan Senor; Deputy Managing Editor, TIME, Romesh Ratnesar; and former, Assistant Secretary Of State, Richard Holbrooke.

A Journalist like Christian Amanpour who travels the world and see things in a certain perspective because of her first hand embrace of many different cultures, and she too, is one with an exotic background, being from Iran , gave us insight to the feed back of what outsiders thought of the U.S. It wasn’t pretty needless to say. Fareed Zakaria, who studies foreign policy and gains experience talking to world leaders on his show said that , “its really only in the past eight years that the U.S image has been in the decline, and that most countries revere us , they just want to see us lead again.”

Dan Senor who supports Obama for President, retorted, “Americas foreign policy is totally wrong: on free trade, engagement “, ‘and going to war with the wrong country doesn’t gain us any respect either, we need to engage not only our allies but our enemies as well. Romesh Ratnesar chimed in “ For far too long we’ve been living a bubble and our showcase of arrogance has burst it”.

Speaking of Obama, TIMES did a polling on how the two U.S candidates for president was being received by other countries, the percentage was staggering, 90-10 favored Obama for president in Germany was the highest and the rest of the polling was as high or just a bit lower, all favoring Obama. To paraphrase Mr. Zakaria,”there is a real feeling that Obama is an ideal candidate , not only because of his background of having a white mother and a black father from Kenya, but because he seems to get it . The policy that Senator John McCain is putting forward seems more of the same for most people and they looking for something entirely non-republican”.

I must say listening to this discourse mostly on foreign policy, had me ready for a whole new talk of politics: Race, Media & Politics… woooo! As you can see, I am salivating! Omar Wasow of Black Planet, moderated this sexy baby…On the panel: Professor, Georgetown University, and writer , Michael Eric Dyson, (And speaking of sexy) Contributor CNN own, Amy Holmes , Op-Ed Columnist, The New York Times, Charles Blow, and last but not least, chief Officer, president and Treasurer, Radio one, Alfred C. Liggins, III .

Not one of them was afraid of going in and tackle these controversial issues that plague America for so long. Among all the topics that was talked about was Jeremiah Wright, Jesse Jackson and what Obama needed to do not to be perceive just as a black candidate. Oh boy, did it get heated!!! And right before it burned , time was up.

Final thought: There were many panels and discussions on race, media and politics, and with many different point of views. The concept of America is freedom, the history of America is making history and the concept left for the people is to follow the constitution and make it better… And there lies the discourse.

The Summit was organized by Mr Victor Harwood President of Digital Media, he and his staff did a great job of putting on a summit of this magnitude, we also like to thank mr Harwood for his kind invite like always, for more info about upcoming Conferences and summits, log onto www.digitalhollywood.info
